Acer has updated its AOD150 Aspire One netbook with AOD250 netbooks. The specs of Acer Aspire One AOD250 are pretty much standard for a netbook but the AOD250 is thinner and lighter than the AOD150.
The 10.1-inch screen has a WSVGA native resolution of 1024 x 600 which is standard for a screen this size and supports up to 262K color depth. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses shared video memory with the main memory. Acer’s CrystalBrite display technology guarantees the best possible visual experience by preventing the diffusion of surrounding light. Compared to normal TFT LCDs, Acer CrystalBrite technology is able to read color coordinates more accurately, thus minimizing
distortion and creating high-fidelity colors in all environments.
The Acer Aspire One AOD250 netbook is powered by a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 Processor which is the same that’s seen across the entire world of netbooks, and there’s nothing else under the hood that’s not cookie-cutter standard now for an Atom netbook. However, Acer has incorporated some changes to the basic specification according to the installed operating system.
The Windows XP models comes with Atom N270 processor,1GB of RAM (upgradeable to 2GB) and 160GB SATA Hard Drive. The higher end models comes with the marginally faster Atom N280.
The Windows 7 Starter models comes with Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM (upgradeable to 2GB) and 250GB SATA Hard Drive. The higher end models comes with the marginally faster Atom N280.
The updated Aspire One AOD250-1613 Android, features a dual-boot option with Android and Windows XP, and comes with Atom N280, 1GB RAM (upgradeable to 2GB), and 160GB SATA Hard Drive.
A standard set of input-output ports consists of three USB ports, VGA, Ethernet, 802.11b/g WiFi, microphone and headphone jacks, multi-card reader and a storage card slot make up the essentials. All this in a minuscule form factor makes it all the more impressive.
A Crystal Eye Webcam is integrated in the LCD that delivers a smooth video streaming and high quality images for video conferencing. It operates great in low light situations.
The built in microphone has superior voice quality that keeps background noise low and minimizes echoes. The stereo speakers are weak, both in volume and sound quality which is not surprising for a netbook. Thanks to the optimized Dolby headphone technology 5.1-channel audio through the headphones are great.
The chassis is well built and its overall smooth finish makes it a pleasure to work with. The screen hinge, where the bulk of the battery is housed, is silver on both sides and there is a small gap between the screen and the CPU/keyboard unit. Overall, it looks very contemporary. Not bad for a budget netbook.
Once you get used to the smaller form factor, working on the Acer Aspire One AOD250 is a piece of cake. I had no problem typing out this review on MS WORD using the compact keyboard, while simultaneously surfing the Web through Wi-Fi with music in the background. The 84-key keyboard is 89% of standard-size keyboard with multi-gesture touchpad. The touchpad can be disabled with one touch of a button if the user prefers using an external mouse.
When it comes to netbook batteries, the most common choice is between three and six cells; three cells are thinner but generally last 2 to 3 hours, while six cells are thicker and can last in the 5-8 hour range. As with all netbook manufacturers, larger hard drives tend to come with bigger battery capacity with a corresonding increase in the price of the product. The Acer Aspire One AOD250 netbook comes in four lithium ion battery options;
- 3-cell – 2200mAh, up to 3.0 hours life.
- 6-cell – 4400mAh, up to 6.0 hours life.
- 6-cell – 5200mAh, up to 7.5 hours life.
- 6-cell – 5800mAh, up to 9.0 hours life.
