Buffalo has introduced the MiniStation Metro HD-PXTU2 series USB portable hard drive that comes with 256 Bit AES hardware encryption to protect your data from unwanted access. The encryption is always on, but it is completely transparent to the user until a password is enabled via Buffalo’s SecureLockWare. Once the password is enabled, it MUST be provided to access the data. If you do not use the password and remove the drive from the enclosure, the data will still be encrypted and inaccessible outside of the Metro’s chassis.

The Metro HD-PXTU2 comes with TurboPC for Windows which will increase file transfer rate up to 2X over standard USB hard drive. It also has an autobackup Utility application which helps with backing up your data.

The Buffalo MiniStation comes formatted as a FAT32 drive – which allows the drive to work with Windows, Linux and the Mac, but carries a 4GB file-size limit. You’ll want to use the Disk Formatter software to change the file system to NTFS to backup large files, such as Outlook PST file.

The hard drive touts a rubberized chassis and BumperBody shock absorbers that surround the hard drive inside, defending it from damage due to an incidental knock or a hard drop. General Thoughts

The Buffalo MiniStation Metro HD-PXTU2 portable hard drive is an excellent bus powered drive that delivers great speed and easy to use backup software. The only drawback is you won’t be able to use it as a drive to boot from. There is a virtual CD built into the flash which cannot be removed or disabled. This interferes with the boot process. It’s not a problem at all if you want to use the drive just as a drive to copy things to and from. Users who care more about style than speed may still find the MiniStation Metro compelling due to it’s impressive shock protective abilities, and the convenient, captive cable design.

Samsung N150 Netbook with 3G is Now Available from Verizon Wireless

Verizon has added the Samsung N150 to its mix of 3G netbooks. The netbook now comes with a 3G modem that works with both the Verizon’s EVDO network and tri-band HSPA networks, including AT&T’s in the US, Canadian networks and at least some of Europe. The carrier preloads it with SIM support for international traveling.

The 2.73-pound Samsung N150 features include seven-hour battery life, Intel Atom N450 1.66 GHz processor, Windows 7 Starter, and a chargeable USB port that charges mobile devices even when the N150 is turned off. Other features include 93 percent full-size keyboard, up to 1GB memory, webcam, SD/SDHC/MMC card slot, 160GB hard drive, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR

As always,to get the subsidized netbook price, users must subscribe to a Mobile Broadband pricing plan. One costs $39.99 per month for 250MB of data, with 10 cents/MB overage charges. A $59.99 plan allows for up to 5GB of monthly data, with 5 cents/MB overage charges.

Intel to Phase Out Celeron Processors in 2011

Intel has recently told their notebook partners that they plan to cut back the manufacturing of Celeron CPU’s and will replace this range with Pentium and dual core Atom N-series processors. The schedule for a complete phase-out of the Celeron line has been set for 2011, according to sources from notebook makers.

Intel has denied the rumors saying it has no plans to phase out the Celeron brand in 2011.

With Intel to launch dual-core Atom N processors in the third quarter, at a similar price level with existing Celeron processors, Intel’s Celeron-phase-out plans will help the company avoid the product lines competing for demand, the sources noted.

An Intel roadmap previously revealed to DigiTimes put three new mobile Celerons on the market in September, but the rollout already hints at the overlap the company is hoping to end. However, Celerons still have a visible footprint in the portable space but have been pushed to the margins as even the least expensive notebooks are starting use the slightly faster Pentium processors.
