Gateway LT2802u Atom N455 10.1-inch Netbook Review

The Gateway LT2802u Atom N455 10.1-inch Netbook is an entry level machine. It features the Intel Atom N455 processor, which is still only a single core atom processor, so don’t expect to do any hardcore computing with this little laptop.

The stylish netbook has a luxurious look with a sleek trim, great curves and well-crafted bezels, with touches of chrome and stainless steel. Plus, its palmrests and touchpads echo or accent the cover design.

The LT2802U has a 10.1” LED backlit screen with a native resolution of 1024×600 pixels that displays crisp, vivid images. The most interesting feature of this netbook is the Social networks key which lets you instantly connect to social media sites, including Facebook, Flickr and YouTube.

The rest of the specs are pretty standard for a netbook — consisting of the typical array with three USB ports, Ethernet, VGA-out socket and memory card reader.

Upgrading the Gateway LT2802u Atom N455 10.1-inch Netbook Memory from 1GB to 2GB

Take note of the following;

• The netbook comes with only 1 slot and it is populated by a 1GB memory module
• That means you have to remove the 1GB RAM module to insert the new 2GB RAM module
• Make sure you purchase the right memory module – a 204 pin DDR3 SODIMM notebook memory module (1066MHz)
• Installing the memory is not so straight forward and involves removing the keyboard first and then remove 5 phillips screws from under the keyboard to remove the back panel. Follow the steps outlined below (or watch the video clip below for a demonstration)
• Step 1 – Turn the netbook upside down and remove the battery
• Step 2 – Flip the netbook back over and open the netbook
• Step 3 – Release the 4 tabs above the function keys with a small flat screw driver. They are located above F4, F8, F12 and Del keys. It will be a good idea to start in the upper left hand corner keeping gentle pressure with another screw driver to lift the keyboard
• Step 4 – Release the 2 tabs between the bezel and the keyboard. Found on left of the TAB key and the right of \ (backslash) key
• Step 5 – Upon removing all the tabs gently flip the keyboard over to access the keyboard connector. Gently lift the black connector tab towards the screen at about a 45 degree angle freeing the keyboard ribbon cable
• Step 6 – Remove 5 screws to access the back panel door. All of the screws are labeled “Door” so it should be obvious
• Step 7 – Once the screws are out, press the “Door Release” (located near the lower right screw) with a screw driver to push the bottom door open. You may want to slightly lift the netbook up so you can let the door open when you press this tab
• Step 8 – Flip the netbook over and you might have to gently pry the cover off
• Step 9 – The memory module is easy to remove. Pop out the old, pop in the new. (Follow the steps outlined in easily self upgrade RAM)
• Step 10 – If you want to remove the hard drive, pull the tab located near the hard drive connector and flip open the netbook. There is a hole where the hard drive can be pushed and pressed through
• Step 11 – Reverse order the above steps to reassemble the netbook

Most users agree that the netbook feels solid and has a nice feel to it. Users of previous models of Gateway netbook and notebooks speak highly of the reliability of Gateway computers and how it has served them well for many years.

There were some negative reviews for this product but the majority of those came from people that had a wrong expectation of what a netbook can do. Netbooks don’t have all the features of a full laptop. They are smaller and great for internet browsing, messaging, and work on the go, but they often have less memory and battery time (due to their size) than their larger counterparts. This netbook also lacks a CD drive. Some things can just be downloaded from the internet.

This is a great netbook. It is one of the cheapest you’ll find, and it works really well. The only problems are that it only has 1GB of RAM and the lid gets fingerprints on it really easily. We would recommend the netbook, but make sure it serves your needs.
