Samsung N140 10.1-inch Netbook Review

Following the launch of Windows 7 a flood of new netbooks incorporating it has hit the market. Amongst these is the ultra-sleek Samsung N140. It features a 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 pixel LED backlit display that delivers clear high resolution images. It is powered by the Intel Atom 1.66GHz N280 processor and Intel GMA 950 graphics chipset. The Samsung N140 doesn’t look dramatically different from NC10 launched a year. It is slightly lighter, but while the chassis has the same general shape, it has been refined a little.

The Samsung N140 features 1GB of RAM and an easy-access panel for the memory slot, though you’ll have to remove the existing 1GB SODIMM if you want to upgrade the memory. A careful examination of the specification shows that the Samsung N140 uses 800MHz DDR2 RAM, whereas the NC10 uses 533MHz-rated memory. We don’t think this will add any performance to the machines, since the Atom’s front-side bus is limited to 533MHz.

The Wi-Fi wireless card has been revised to 802.11n and the bluetooth has been upgraded to 2.1. Users can enjoy an enhanced multimedia experience with the good sound quality and SRS effects that produce High Definition 3D sound. The keyboard is as good as the earlier Samsung netbooks and it comes pre-installed with Windows 7 Starter on a 250GB hard drive. Equipped with a 6-cell 5900mAh battery it has long battery life of 7.5 hours.

The rest of the specifications are also fairly standard -three USB 2.0 ports, 3-in-1 memory card reader, webcam, etc. Overall, it’s a very nice compact looking netbook weighing only 2.8 lbs and uses a pleasing combo of matte and glossy plastic.

Upgrading Samsung N140 Memory from 1GB to 2GB

Take note of the following;

  • The netbook comes with only 1 slot and it is populated by a 1GB memory module
  • That means you have to remove the 1GB RAM module to insert the new 2GB RAM module
  • Make sure you purchase the right memory module – a 200 pin DDR2 SODIMM notebook memory module (667MHz or 800MHz)
  • Installing the memory is a snap. You just need a tiny Philips screwdriver to remove one screw from back cover. Once unscrewed slide the door towards the screw and lift up gently. Pop out the old, pop in the new, replace the cover and boot it back up (Follow the steps outlined in easily self upgrade RAM)

User Reviews

Samsung finally has a worthy successor to the NC10 in the N140, even if it’s short on new additions. It boasts highly developed technology with excellent audio, finer touchpads, enhanced processor and the new Windows 7 startup operating system. The most remarkable feature of the Samsung N140 is its bright matte display. Most netbooks in the market have glossy displays which can be difficult to read in bright surroundings. The affordable price should make it a winner.
