The Sony VAIO VPC-W215AX netbook packs a ton of features into it’s small frame and offers something else other Sony models don’t: Verizon Wireless Mobile Broadband Built-In, America’s largest and most reliable 3G network (Broadband Service is sold separately). The built-in real-time GPS lets you navigate even the most unfamiliar places with ease (GPS is available in the U.S. and Canada only). This makes the netbook the perfect travelers companion.
The netbook is powered by the new 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N450 processor which makes the device ultra-portable. Though other netbooks offer the same configuration at lower prices, Sony offers a 10.1” of screen with a native resolution of 1,366×768, far better in comparison with 1,024×600 family. The crisp and bright screen looks great. Even smaller icons and text looks good on screen.
While the Vaio VPC-W215AX does have Bluetooth 2.1 and 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity, it lacks HDMI-out, eliminating any easy video playback on an HDTV. Sony’s media software does offer HDNA streaming to PlayStation 3 and Location-Free TV devices, but that’s hardly as universal a solution as a simple HDMI port.
The netbook is only 1 inch thick, but with the 6 cell battery at the back of the netbook it brings the total height up to nearly 2 inches at that point. The edges of the case are slightly rounded with both an SD card slot and a Memory stick slot found near the front. There is also both a hardware based button to shut off the wireless and a switch to turn on the netbook found on the front as well. Unlike most netbooks the Sony VAIO VPC-W215AX have 2 USB ports only.
The inside area features a dimpled texture design that’s really nice and the keyboard has been little raised. Though keys in keyboard are broadly spaced, but they appear small for typing. Right Shift, Function and Tab appear too small.
The netbook comes pre-installed with Microsoft Windows 7 Starter Operating System and the battery has long power up to 8 hours life that you can take it to anywhere anytime you want.

Upgrading Sony Vaio VPC-W215AX Memory from 1GB to 2GB
Take note of the following;
- The netbook comes with only 1 slot and it is populated by a 1GB memory module
- That means you have to remove the 1GB RAM module to insert the new 2GB RAM module
- Make sure you purchase the right memory module – a 200 pin DDR2 SODIMM notebook memory module (667MHz or 800MHz)
- Installing the memory is a snap. You just need a tiny Philips screwdriver to remove one screw from back cover. Once unscrewed slide the door towards the screw and lift up gently. Pop out the old, pop in the new, replace the cover and boot it back up (Follow the steps outlined in easily self upgrade RAM)

The Sony VAIO VPC-W215AX is one of the nicer overall netbook packages out there for people who spent a lot of time on the road. However, the same basic combo of an Intel Atom N450 CPU, 1GB of RAM, 250GB hard drive, Windows 7 Starter and wireless broadband is definitely available for less.
