Sony Vaio X – an exceptionally slim and light netbook

Just introduced into the netbook market, the Sony Vaio X is so slim and so light that it can even bend if not held carefully, which can be a bit unnerving, but Sony says that it’s designed to bend somewhat. Weighing in at a mere 1.6 pounds and just a little more than ½ an inch in thickness it is slimmer than a paper notebook. It is ultra light because it comes with solid-state drive and carbon fiber chassis.

And yet it packs a punch. The Sony Vaio X has all the standard specs including a 11.1” screen size with a 1366 x 768-pixel resolution offering excellent color reproduction. It runs on an Intel Atom Z550 processor at 2.0GHz, faster clock speed than the 1.6GHz and 1.66GHz Atom N270 and N280 processors found in the vast majority of netbooks.

The Sony Vaio X ships with Windows 7 Home Premium, 2GB DDR2 RAM, 128GB SSD , multi-touch trackpad, Memory Stick Duo,SD card slots, Wi-Fi (802.11n) and Bluetooth connectivity. It also comes with built-in 3G capability, which requires a Verizon wireless broadband subscription.

The aluminum keyboard is easy to handle and use. It is designed with spacing between the keys for a comfortable typing experience. The Sony Vaio X Series is supplied with two interchangeable batteries, the standard batteries last for about 3.5 hours of work, while the larger heavier batteries (which increase the overall weight of the netbook) last for an amazing 14 hours.

The Sony Vaio X is expected to make inroads into the premium category of the netbook market thanks to the fact that it is slim and light, and competes directly with with likes of Apple’s Macbook Air and Dell’s Adamo XPS.

The Sony Vaio X is genuinely an amazing piece of engineering and it’s the ultimate laptop for business users who value tiny dimensions and the lowest weight possible. That said, you have to shell out big bucks: $1299 to $1499. It is an expensive proposition to pay so much for a laptop powered by a processor found mainly in much cheaper netbooks.

Designed for maximum visual impact it is available in gold with matte finish, Sony calls this version the “Signature Collection, and a black edition, with a smaller 64GB SSD , is available for $200 less.
